I haven’t spoken a lot about this, but 5 months ago my father passed away. It wasn’t sudden, and over the last year, he and I grew a lot closer. And over that year, I learned being a caregiver for someone you love is hard, awesome, exhausting, and so rewarding. The good news is I have some tips to help life get easier.
I want to share 5 tips for caregivers that will make your life easier!
1: SHOP SMART
I know when your caring for someone else there’s a lot to do, a lot to buy, and a budget to stick to. That’s why Sams Club was (still is! Parenting is hard to Y’all.) a lifesaver for me. I was able to buy the Ensure (his favorite was strawberry), depends, and all of his favorite snacks in one stop.
Sam’s Clubs prices can’t be beaten, but my favorite part of shopping with them is the in club pick up and shipping options they have. I can buy everything I need and never have to step foot in a store.
2: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
It can be easy to forget to take care of yourself when you’re trying to balance being a caregiver to a loved one and taking care of yourself. It’s important that you take care of yourself though because you’ll need the strength to take care of your loved one. Short and frequent breaks doing something you enjoy is a good way to relax a little.
3: ACCEPT HELP
Accepting help goes hand in hand with taking care of yourself. Make sure you accept help whether it is from friends, family, or medical staff. Maybe for you, that means having someone come in a few times a week and giving you a break.
4.CONNECT WITH OTHERS
Make sure you connect with friends and especially other caregivers. Sharing stories, problems, and laughs is good for you. Meeting up with friends gets you away and meeting with other caregivers gives you the opportunity to connect with someone going through the same thing.
As a caregiver, you’re going to be responsible for a lot of paperwork, medical information, medications, doctors appointments, and what you would normally be doing. It’s hard! I love Google Calendar to keep me on track and a 3 ring binder with tabs for paperwork.
Caregiving is difficult but there are things you can do to make it easier. Just remember this is just a stage in life and you will cherish these moments later in life.
