Working at home with kids is hard. Working at home when you have a special needs kid is even harder. It can be done though, I promise.
When you have a special needs child, staying home isn’t a luxury most of the time it’s a necessity. Most special needs children have a lot of doctors visits and need someone to learn how to not only handle emergencies but also how to help continue their therapy at home.
Working at home when you have a special needs kid
With any kids, a schedule will help, but especially with kids that have a hard time with change. Even if you can’t have a strict schedule, a routine that you normally follow will help. Wake up > Breakfast > brush teeth > and so on. Even if it’s not the same time every day, it at least lets them know what they will be doing when they wake up.
My middle son needs a schedule but my other kids tend to like to do their own thing. Which is why we more of a routine in our house. It gives the best of both worlds.
Now that I have na office it has made getting work done easier. I have a spot for the kid’s to play in the corner and this way I know they are safe and I can still see them. If your not able to have a actual office try setting up just a desk or table somewhere, so when the kids know you’re at that table it means your working.
A designated working space has saved me many headaches.
With my middle son I need to keep a very close eye on him, so I bought these cameras that go in the playroom. I am able to put them in the playroom to play, but also still be able to see and hear what’s going on in there.
My son has Autism and Epilepsy, so not only does the camera help with the being able to see the issue it also helps record any incidents he has for his doctor to see.
Earlier bed time
My kids have always gone to bed at 8pm but that doesn’t leave a whole lot of time to run a business, and let’s face it momma’s gotta get paid. What I did was I slowly started making their bed time earlier.
My son doesn’t do change well so for him I started by going back by 5 minutes, and honestly no one really even noticed a difference but for me. I am now able to knock 4 hours of work out at night and still get to bed at a decent hour.
I know quiet time can be a very hard thing to achieve. I know. It is so worth it though. Start putting your kids in their own little quiet space for one hour a day. This is one hour that you can either get work done that you need to do online or even housework. You could even use it for a little me time.
Speaking of me time momma don’t forget to think about yourself. Your kids and your business need a happy and healthy momma to function and thrive.
I know it can be hard to find that time, but you will thank yourself later. Even if you don’t do anything but a little walk, sit on the porch, or even just read a few pages of a book. Take that time for yourself and refresh.
Being a work at home mom is stressful but Working at home when you have a special needs kid is even harder. Wich make is even more important to take care of yourself. Remember you’re not alone and you don’t have to be perfect.
